Licodia Eubea
Licodia Eubea is a village set in the Hyblaean Mountains, Sicily. Its history spans Prehistory, Greek and Roman times, Middle Age and Modern Era. Evidences of such periods, found by researchers from the early XX century until today, are exhibited within the Museo Civico entitled to the scholar Antonino Di Vita.
The small historic centre hosts picturesque monuments, such as the ruins of Santapau Castle, monasteries and beautiful churches decorated with 18th century paintings and stuccos.
Licodia Eubea has also a renowned wine and food tradition. Hill placed, the fertile Licodia meadows are particularly suitable for grazing and for cheese-making. Another important farming resource is grape cultivation and cicerchia, an old endangered leguminous plant, from which a local dish, called patacò, is made.
Since 2011 Licodia Eubea has been hosting the Rassegna del Documentario e della Comunicazione Archeologica. The event is held in the ex-church of San Benedetto e Santa Chiara. The festival organizers are the local section of Archeoclub d’Italia and the cultural association ArcheoVisiva.
The church itself is a small local history treasure. Once it was annexed to the close monastery, it underwent, from the 19th century on, many reuses, and it was then abandoned in the ‘70s. After a recent restoration, the area became a cultural space, where concerts, exhibitions and other art events take place.
